Could someone with an Ancestry.com account help me find a family line?

I am trying to find information on Isaac Osman who lived in Shamokin, PA, Northumberland County.

He was born in November 1846 and died November 12, 1906. I have tons of information on his Wife Harriet S. (Bordner), and all of his children, but I can't seem to find any information about his parents/grandparents.

His wife Harriet was remarried to a Frank E. Osman after his death, so it is possible that he and Frank were brothers, but I cannot prove this.

The family rumor says that It is possible that either Isaacs dad or grandfather came from Turkey, but I have no way to prove this either.

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. Frank Osman is the son of Matilda and Jacob Osman. There are several Osmans living the same general area, so Frank could have been a cousin.

    I'll keep looking.

    No trace of Turkey yet.

  2. Isaac's parents were John and Mary Ann Osman of Lower Swatara PA. Both were born in PA. John was born about 1814 and Mary Ann Bretz  was born May 19, 1814. Many records show his father as Joseph Osman.

Not that Turkey isn't a remote...albeit very remote...possibility. But I think you're looking at Pennsylvania Dutch roots. Turks weren't called Turks in the 1800s...and Turks weren't allowed to leave the Ottoman Empire until the late 1800s. It's about as remote of a possibility as you can get from the records I've seen.

  3. UK answer.

I have had areally good look around on ancestry.com. I have found the Isaac that I think it might be, but there's just a little niggle as far as I'm concerned the 1850 census states he was born in 1845. I don't know what system the USA enumerators had when writing birth years down but over here in the UK it was quite normal for the birth year to be rounded up or down to the nearest 5. I had an ancestor born in 1862 according to her birth certificate on the census for 1871 her age was given as 11 and birth year 1860.

Any way have a look at these two and tell me whether you think I might or might not have the right fella.

  4. According to the 1880 US Census his parents were both from PA.

    The one I found was:

    Isaac Osman 33 PA Farmer

Harriet S. Osman 25 PA Keeping House

    Emma M. Osman 8

    Minnie N. Osman 4

    William F. Osman 3

    Alice L. Osman 10 mos

    Is this the same guy?

  5. I see you have a bunch of questions in the same line, here and on various message borads. You obviously know what you are doing.  Have you tried going backwards, looking for any family names? I see that Thomas Osman had offspring with the first name of Isaac. He landed in Long Island, not that far a trek to PA. Have you gone to the family forum's of Thomas's women and looked? More than one of my ancestors married a cousin of sibling's wife.  Something else that I've found is that men sometimes changed their names, used their middle name as their first, especially if they'd remarried.

What did the PA census say about Isaac? Was his birthplace not listed?

  6. In 1860, there are 2 records for Isaac Osman in Pennsylvania, 1 born abt 1855 and this 1 below born abt 1848

    1860 United States Federal Census

    Middletown, Dauphin Co., Pennsylvania

    Name: Isaac Osman

    Age in 1860: 12

    Birth Year: abt 1848

    Post Office: Middletown

Household Members: Name Age Place of birth

    John Osman 40 PA

    Mary A Osman 40 PA

    John Osman 16 PA

    Isaac Osman 12 PA

    Mary Miller 15

[Note: John and Mary are still living in Middletown, PA in 1880]

I would guess the Osman's are of German descent,  many of the Osman wives were born in Bavaria, Prussia and Germany.

Rootsweb.com show the following search results for John Osman, spouse's name Mary:

    John OSMAN

Marriage  Mary Ann BRETZ b: 19 MAY 1814

    Children

    John OSMAN

    Isaac OSMAN

    Mary Ann's parents are:

    Father: Ludwig BRETZ

    Mother: Catharine FOX b: 21 DEC 1773

This note is attached to the Ludwig Bretz:

Note: Ludwig emigrated to America on the Ship Royal Union. The commander of the ship was Clement Nicholson from Rotterdam. The ship landed in Philadelphia on Aug 15, 1755.

Ludwig was married twice and had a total of 16 children, 15 with Catherine (including Mary Ann).
