Could he do this now and Congress have no recourse to stop him? I think if I was President, I would have done this already if I could have. Might have pissed off some, but...oh well! If I am the leader...I am going to lead!

  1. It doesn't remove the ban.  It is still illegal until congress lifts it.  Both bans have to be lifted.   It is supposed to put pressure on congress to lift their ban also.

I would not say Bush is leading.  If they start drilling tomorrow, the oil won't hit the market for years.  If anything, this is more of the lack of leadership we have been experiencing with this administration.

  2. No.  Not unless he wants to fight it out in court and lose, like he did 3x with the military tribunals.

  3. I wish he would try.  Just the attempt might knock the futures market down a little.

  4. No.

There were 3 blocks to drilling off the coasts.  Bush's repeal of the Executive Order removes one of those blocks.

Congress would need to change the law, and then the states have laws too regarding their coast lines that would have to be changed.

  5. President Bush wants to do this but he can't get past congress...sucks.

  6. If it is an Emergency and Threatens National Security, Yes He Can by EXECUTIVE ORDER!  This is the Case.....

  7. only if it's a security threat. As commander in chief he would then have that type of right.

If I was Bush, I would off done it like you said and labeled it as a national security issue cause we can't keep giving money to these terrorist nations!!!

  8. Yall really believe by lifting the ban oil prices will drop? 1) It'll take 10 years to have oil plants pumping oil 2) It only going to stop gas prices going up to $10 gallon, is gonna stay at $4 3) Supply and Demand is not the answer is just a false issue to believe the world 4) Is it obvious oil prices rose so fast and yet nobody doing anything

I'll say there have to be investigation on oil companies

  9. The congressional limits on drilling offshore are law, the president can't issue an executive order overruling existing law, that would be waaay too powerful.

  10. He can't order private business to do anything, but he can lift the Presidential ban on drilling, and Congress can follow by lifting their ban.

  11. The president could do it, but the congress is already starting impeachment proceedings against him for no reason and wasting tax dollars. Congress is so useless, their approval rating is 9%.  Bush did the best he could do without abusing his power. The next step he could do is open the petrolem reserves to punish the speckulaters.
