I remember when I was growing up and how if someone was afraid of going out in the rain, then they would be scolded at, being told that they weren't made of cotton candy and wouldn't melt if a little rain touched them. So maybe that's why the witch melted when doused with water, because she was made of sugar. Maybe she was like a candy that is sour on the outside but sweet on the inside.

  1. Actually, Wicked the Musical kind of addresses that fact. It's amazing, you can see videos, learn about casts, look at pictures, and more here:

  2. You should read:

"Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by Gregory Maguire

    Synopsis

"An astonishingly rich re-creation of the land of Oz, this book retells the story of Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, who wasn't so wicked after all. Taking readers past the yellow brick road and into a phantasmagoric world rich with imagination and allegory, Wicked just might change the reputation of one of the most sinister characters in literature."

That might definitely give you your answer :)

  3. I agree completely with the other answerer. But I also suggest you see the musical too!

Both the musical and the book are truly unique works that completely change your understanding and perception of the land of Oz.
