Question:

Could the trait still be passed down in the breed

Let's say that a white persian cat mated with a siamese cat with yellow fur and they gave birth to a kitten that looked like a pure-white siamese cat. When that kitten grows up, it may then mate to another white persian.

Since one of the kitten's parents was a siamese cat with the colour of yellow fur, could this cat still end up having a litter of fluffy yellow Siamese cats or yellow persians, even though this cat and the persian were both white?

  1. it all depends on the dominant gene

but to me it sounds like the white is the dominant gene

so therefore all the kittens will be white

but will still have the yellow gene in them

so the yellow gene may pass down if they mate with another yellow cat

then they will may get a couple of yellow cats and a couple of white cats

    W-white - dominanat gene

    w-yellow - recessive gene

    1)

    __ | _w_ |_w

    W | Ww | Ww

    W | Ww | Ww

since W is the dominant gene all the kittens will be white

    2) if one of those kittens mates with a pure bred white

    __ |_W__| _w

    W | WW | Ww

    W | WW | Ww

since W is dominant all kittens will still be white but half with have ONLY the white gene and others will carry the yellow gene

    3) if a kitten from the first litter was to mate with a pure bred yellow

    __|_W_|_w

    w | Ww | ww

    w | Ww | ww

since white is the dominant gene there is a chance of half the kittens being white with the yellow gene and the other half of the kittens being yellow with NO white gene

  2. I believe it is possible...but most likely if it does happen it the cat will give birth to a few maybe one or two at the most... =]

  3. Yes, but I think it depends if color or fluffy trait is Dominant or Recessive.

It also depends on if the cat the kitten breeds with carries the recessive traits.

  4. Well, most likely any number of combination. I have a cat that's stripey and white, and I have her daughter who's grey striped. The grey striped had kittens with a black cat and some of the kittens looked part siamese and grew up to have blue eyes...so they could have combos from way back down the line
