Question:

Could the universe ever have, or develop, full self-awareness of itself?

If so, what would this mean? If such a universe existed, and it had inhabitants, how would their individual bits of awareness fit into the grand totality of such an all encompassing self-awareness?

  1. We're a part of it and we're aware, but your thought of an all encompassing awareness is interesting. Since time is a part of the universe it could have happened before time, so I guess that would make it God.

    Maybe if the religions weren't making all this noise we could hear what it's saying to us.

    In any case one of the better questions I've seen here through several avatars. I think I'll star it.;->

  9. I doubt it, that is the same as saying the bacteria on your fingernails gaining awareness. But as Carl Sagan once said "We are a way for the cosmos to know itself."

  13. I think the total self-awareness of a universe would result in apathy, leading to the suicide of said universe.

  14. Very close to the Gaea concept Asimov used in his later Foundation books. I don't have an answer for you.

    I always enjoyed Asimov's writing, but I was disappointed in how he ended Foundation with the Gaea philosophy(?).
