  1. Of course!!!

  2. Suppose there were advanced beings who lived 20 or 30 thousand years ago.  One could say that even their largest artifacts would have disappeared by now, but if they were advanced, they would have had satellites.  Their satellites in geosynchronous orbit, or anywhere near it, would still be there.  We are capable of tracking very small objects in orbit.  There are no satellites from before the current era.

In any case, I think things like dams and canals could last for tens of thousands of years.  Nothing like that has ever been discovered.  If you try to put these beings much farther into the past, then it becomes increasingly difficult to explain how they could have evolved so fast from the origins that have been well documented.  You might come up with beings from outer space, but all these suggestions are baseless.  When there is no evidence at all to indicate that something ever happened, there is little point in hypothesizing it.  Guessing at what *could* have been is an exercise in futility.

  3. the eternal return, huh?

  4.   They were not wiped out, they knew WE were coming!

  5. If they were really advanced, they would have left behind evidence even if they all died (ie Mayans). Or we are too stupid to find the clues.

  6. If they were as advanced as we are now, they would have been able to blow up a comet before it struck earth. There would also be an impact crater that we would see today.

BUT, there could have been a more advanced civilization that was taken by a disease or left for the stars.
