I have an 11 year old son who has normal verbal abilities and can do things for himself but wont. He has very odd behaviors and no patience what so ever. He doesnt have any friends and would rather be by himself rather than be outside with the family. He reads and spells well above his grade level but doesnt comprehend what he reads. I recently pulled him from school and put him in a partial hospital program to be evaluated and now there sayin he should be tested for autism. I cant have him tested till September. He ''EXPLODES'' at anything and has no respect for his family . He doesnt like his fingers to be wet and cetain noises set him off. He has never played with toys only interested in electronics. There are so many things i cant write it all any personal experience would be greatly appreciated. I love him but its the same thing every day, he shows only happy or angry emotions theres no in between. i need help any ideas?

  1. Are these symptoms something that he has always had? Or are they recent? I will be honest with you, I think you need to find  a new doctor. there is no reason that you should have to wait until september for a diagnosis. And whether it is autism or not, these are things that your current doctor is obviously overlooking. Best of luck to you and dont worry...whatever it may be ( autism or not) a clear diagnosis is the first step to helping your son.

  2. Does he have a hard time making eye contact? That is usually a very good indicator.

What type of testing are you waiting to have done? While you are waiting you should speak to an occupational therapist. They can observe your childs behavoir and then evaluate him, and there should be no age limit for this type of evaluation. The government usully has free occupational therapists, you should do some research and find out whow you can get one to visit your home. Goodluck hun!

  3. Have you brought this to his pediatricians attention.

Has he always been this way or has this recently started?

  4. look up that aspergers version. sounds possible..but u'd def need a diagnosis.

  5. Everything is labeled autism, when in some cases its just a disturbed kid, who needs some medical attention to get to the root of anger.

Something may have happened to him that you may not be aware of

Get him some therapy.....he is older, so it may have been something in his childhood...find out, before he does something that he will be put away for.

Or, even worse, harming hmself beyond healing..

  6. ASD is a complex neurological disorder on a spectrum. That means that there are degrees of dysfunction. Asperger's Syndrome, which is at the high end of the spectrum ,sounds to be what he has. It does not affect intelligence. Indeed, children at this end of the spectrum are usually quite bright.

Children with Asperger's are often hyperactive, have extreme sound sensitivity and focus on one activity to the exclusion of others. They also are often touch sensitive, but have less reaction to pain.

It sounds like you are on the right path by having him tested. The earlier the diagnosis, the better you are able to help. Read and research all you can. Try some of the techniques in the articles and websites listed below. Adapt them to your specific situation and September will be here before you know it.

  7. I would look into it being aspergers. He sounds a lot like my cousin's son who has aspergers. My son has ADHD. Depending on the doctor and professional who works with special needs children ADHD and Aspergers are forms of Autism. Some say they are totally different. I see some these things your son has problems with in my own son. He has light, sound, taste, smell sensory issues. Shoes and socks are a problem with him as well. I'm always finding his socks lieing around the house. He is also happy or angry, never in between, especially lately. Call around and find a peds doc that is really good with these special needs. I found mine and she's wonderful! She doesn't push meds unless she thinks it's absolutely necessary for the child. She takes input from all teachers in his life (school, EBD, karate, parents, grandparents). But don't take the diagnosis of one doctor, get second opinion before going ahead with anything.
