I live in an apt. complex, well, this cat (med size) just shows up and follows me to my apartment, his tail sticking straight up. He/She very loveable and will not leave my patio, so...im thinking maybe it belongs to someone who lives in the complex, but I've been here for a while and have never seen it before, so....I feed the cat, rt. and now every night it comes to my patio, well, I put a box for it to sleep in, just incase it has no where to go. but I keep telling the cat that he/she isn't my cat. Now what do I do? Do you think it's a stray cat or belongs to someone, the cat acts like it just loves me. Now, I'm getting attached to the "not my cat" it is sleeping in the box. The cat is very loveable like I said, only once in a while, when I'm petting the cat it will nip/or feels like a slight bite. (kinda hurts) what's that all about. PPL help, Thanks!

  1. My brother had a similar situation with a cat hanging around & he'd feed it, etc. The cat was in great shape, fur was fine & he too believed it had to be someones due to being so friendly, loveble & not looking matted. Winter was coming & he took the cat in & he placed a Cat Found Flyer in the complex he lives in along with a picture of the cat, needless to say 2 months went by & no calls, so he kept the cat & he was glad even more when it turned out that kitty must have gotten pregnant right before he took her in. Now hes happy with his new cat & her baby boy as for me i ended up with her baby girl. So my advise to you would try to do the same as he did, you may end up owning a nice cat. As for the little bites, those are affectionate, the cat gets a bit too excited & then does a little bite. My cats do the samething & some of them afterwards give a couple licks in the spot as if they're saying sorry. I hope all works out for you & the kitty. Good Luck

  2. Those are "love bites". It's trying to convey how much it likes you.

You could ask some of your neighbors if they know anything about it.

How did the cat look? dose it have fleas, matted hair, or any injuries? if so I'd wager it's a stray but if it's in good condition it very well be someones pt that likes to wander. Some cats have multiple "homes" lol

  3. It very well could be. It is familiar enough with humans not to be scared of you.

Call the apartment's management and tell them. That way if the person missing their cat reports it missing, they'll have it on record that someone's seen it around. Until then, try posting up some flyers around the complex with your information on it.

  4. Well, if I were in your shoes, I would...

    1. Ask around the apartment if the cat belongs to them.

    2. Go on Craigslist.com in your area, and post your story in the "Pets" Category. The person missing the cat, is likely to go on craigslist, or may have already posted a posting saying their cat is missing.

    3. Also, Check forlike... if there are any marks on the cat. If the cat is biting you, it may have been abused. And you don't want to return the cat to an abusive owner.

It's possible that the cat may have... gotten lost, and since you fed it, just stayed with you. It may belong to someone else though.

BUT, if it's been a while, then keep it!!

  5. Sadly enough it was very likely someones cat (or it wouldn't be friendly) but was put out/abandoned.  If it belonged to a neighbor it would have found it's way home.  Cat owners in apartment complexes don't just let cats in and out.  It could be an outdoor cat of someones if there are homes nearby.  It sounds like he's yours now, he's found a good source of food and someone nice enough to give him some love.

  6. Definitely a stray cat.

If it were someone else's cat, it probably wouldn't be that friendly towards you, and it would have a collar with a tag.

I say it's stray, and for now keep it.

If you EVER see a lost cat sign around the streets, return the cat to its owner immediately!

But if you don't, keep the cat and let it be your pet! It's most likely stray.

If you don't want to keep  your cat, give it to a local pet or animal center.

  7. Look in the local papers, the local petfinder.com lost and found column, and the local craigslist.org pets column to see if anyone has lost the cat matching the description of the this cat.  Also let the shelter know you have found the cat but will be taking care of it in case the owner shows up.  If you don't find anyone in the next week or two, assume the cat is abandoned.  Are you allowed to keep the cat inside?

It could be an outdoor cat of someone in the complex, but I think keeping cats outside is cruel.  If you can give it a better home, go for it.  Again, keep an eye out for missing cat ads that resemble that cat, and, in 2 weeks or so, just assume it is a stray.

  8. If it nips, it's showing a playful side of love.

Feeding it isn't telling it that it's not yours. But it's so understandable. I would get a collar and make a tag for it that says "if you own this cat, call" and put your number on it. IF they call, ask if they want the cat, or if you can take it. Explain what has been going on.

    Poor kitty.

  9. if its a stray it will most likely look pretty scruffy and were i used to live there was a cat that got left behind when their owners moved,so maybe somebody left the cat behind. so helpfully that helps awnser your question.

  10. I guess it is someone's cat. Yours!

Seriously, if you're happy with the cat being there, and the cat is happy being there, which obviously he is, then I guess he's your cat now.

That happened to me once. During a cold winter night, a kitten got into my building and kept meowing until I picked him up. Then he began to purr. So I decided to give him a good meal, since he was kind of skinny. Then I decided he could stay the night. Then I decided to keep him until I found his owner. Then it was until I could find someone to adopt him. Two months later I realized the kitten had found a home. Mine!

As for the nipping, it could just be that he gets excitable sometimes or perhaps you're touching a sensitive spot and it bothers him. My cats nip sometimes, but I know they don't mean anything by it.
