Question:

Could this be the work of some form of virus that my computer can't detect?

Recently, my PC has started crashing random applications. However, the real problem here is that once the program has crashed, it will not open again - each time you click to open it, it will crash instantly, and the only way to make it run again is to completely uninstall and reinstall the crashed program. And even then, it's often just a matter of time before the same thing happens again. It's not just one application either, so I can't put it down to just a bit of a bug in the code. Examples of crashing software: Firefox, MS Office, MSN Messenger, games, etc etc.

There are no other errors that happen alongside this.

I'm running Vista, Ultimate edition on a reasonable spec machine.

I have done a full virus and spyware scan, finding nothing. I have run Spybot Search and Destroy and AVG, and as I said, these come back clean with no problems.

I'd much rather not have to format because I have an awful lot of stuff on here, and there's no available system restore date before this started happening as it was turned off (for some unknown reason!). Though if that's the only option then so be it.

Any suggestions to the cause of this would be much appreciated, thank you! :)

  2. If the applications didn't come with your computer, you will have to temporarily disable your firewall, or security system as you attempt to upload them.

But beyond that, the CCleaner mentioned by a previous answerer should be able to indicate where any conflicts are occurring. I've used it on several computers and it's a safe application.

After re-reading your question, you mentioned that you have a lot of stuff on it. Perhaps there isn't enough free memory to open and run the programs that are crashing.

I believe you can create a restore point at any point of the calendar (anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong about that).

Also, on one of my computers, I had a conflict between Microsoft Office versions 2003 and 2007. I went through the trouble of saving data to my external hard drive, uninstalling, then re-installing them only to experience the same conflicts. So, it's possible (since you haven't mentioned it) that you have aftermarket programs that might be the root of your trouble.

I hope my 2 cents can help.
