Question:

Could this [fictional] revenge scheme work?

I’m writing a story and wanted to know if, legally speaking, a character’s scheme would work out as he planned:

A man catches his wife having an affair, but leaves the house unnoticed by them while they’re still having s*x. He sits in his car, and concocts a somewhat twisted, but seemingly legal plan for revenge. He phones the police, telling them an intruder has entered the house at his address, the female occupant is home, and the intruder MAY be armed. Any false statement is avoided through careful wording, and he does not identify himself to the dispatcher. He then phones the press, giving them the “scoop” on a police raid about to go down. The man then goes to the pub to watch the two lovers be humiliated on television, and probably drown his broken heart in booze.

  1. As someone who knowing reports a false criminal act in progress you would be guilty of a serious offence.  What if the police rushing to a 'crime in progress' got into an accident a people were killed or injured?  What if the guy came out of the house with something in his hand just as a cop approched the house, and the cop thought it was a weapon and shot the guy?  I could give more examples, but the idea is stupid and dangerous.  Also, I doubt your ending 'examples' are based on facts unless there is a lot you are not telling us about the details.  I expect they are nothing but your own imagination at work. to try to make some point..

  2. The police would not be breaking down doors on an anonymous tip. The media also wouldn't show up without good reason. It seems easy in fiction to get the media out but, trust me, they're always elsewhere on bigger stories.

  3. For a fictional story, I like it. Fiction doesn't have to be 100% realistic, just close enough to be plausible.

In reality, it would not happen this way. As was stated earlier, an army of police probably would not be sent until the situation is confirmed that it requires this.

  4. I had forgotten how sick people are or were.

  5. It wouldn't work out, because the police would call out a warning or enter noisily, basically in some way give the naughty couple a heads up.  Also, the press would not be allowed in the house where the naked couple are, nor would they be marched out in the nude.  They would here the couple both say that it was consensual and go on their merry way, telling the reporters (if any even showed up) that there was no story there.

  6. The media is not going to show up on an anonymous tip. Even if they do, all they'll see is a police car outside a house. A swarm of police are not going to show up based on an anonymous call. They'll send one squad car to check it out - when they get a minute. The couple will probably be long done by then.
