Question:

Could this have been heat exhaustion?

I was working on a construction site today (volunteered for Extreme Makeover Home Edition- FUN!!), and just before we left I had the weirdest sensation: I was extremely warm to begin with. However, when I got to the bus stop to wait for the bus I became overwhelmingly dizzy- as in I almost fell over because my balance was that thrown off. I also was quite nauseous, and once the dizziness past I became light headed. I had to find a place to sit down as I just felt generally weak. It wasn't until I got to an air conditioned area that I started to feel better...but I was left with a headache for a few hours.

It kind of freaked me out. I just would like to know what happened so that I know what to do if it ever happens again.

Thanks.

  1. You were definitely suffering from the symptoms Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion.  Take a look at these warning signs.

    Dehydration:

    Irritability

    Nausea or vomiting

    Decreased performance

    Cramps

Heat sensations on head or neck

    Chills

    Heat Exhaustion:

    Irritability

    Nausea or vomiting

    Decreased muscle coordination

    Cramps

Heat sensations on head or neck

    Chills

    Dry mouth

    Heat Stroke:

    Irritability

    Vomiting

    Loss of balance/muscle function/collapse

    Elevated core temperature

    Seizures

    Coma

Make sure to stay hydrated when you work outside in the heat for extended periods of time. It can be dangerous. Good thing you were aware of the warning signs and took a breather in a cool place.

Take a look at this question I answered previously as it will have some good tips if you decide to go in the heat for that type of work again. Kudos to you. That was a wonderful cause!!  ~J~
