My house has both the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms on top of each other. We've had problems with the upstairs bathroom leaking down and now the ceiling in the downstairs bathroom is cracked and there is a black fungus/plant growing out of it. I took a picture of it with my phone. I wonder if i can post it here.

  1. No, it's just a mushroom and it's not harmful.  However, you certainly need to repair the leak upstairs before some harmful molds can develop in your walls and ceiling.  Good luck!

  2. The fact that you have mushrooms growing from your ceiling is an indication that the wooden structure of your house is being digested by fungi.

The plumbing leak needs to be fixed.  The rotten wood needs to be reinforced or replaced.  Any surfaces with molds growing on it should be treated with bleach or some other disinfectant.  You may want to hire an expert in treating mold infestations of homes.  Many people are allergic to mold spores.

  4. You need to fix the leak in your bathroom right away and then remove all of the rotten wood and sheet rock in your ceiling - indoor mold can be a serious health problem.
