It's actually been done.  It's called biodiesel.

I'm sure we can, the additives would have to change , but vegetable oil only takes Lye with other additives to make diesel fuel.

Animal fat would probably have to go through a more cleansing mechanism to keep the smell from being intolerable

U can but the animal fat came from plants.

Yes you can turn animal fat into fuel. You can make bio diesel out of it. You use the same process as you would with used cooking oil. I am sure you know lard is just animal fat and there are still restaurants using it as the oil they cook with. Yes.  It is a variant of biodiesel.  

Also it can be converted by thermal depolymerization into crude oil.

That does not sound like a good, or ethical solution. That would create a demand for animal fat that would simply empower factory farms. See the documentary "Earthlings" or read the article in the Rolling Stone on factory farms.

the diesel engine was invented to run on oil (lint seed?) French fry grease (lard) can be used these days  $6000+ for a diesel conversion unit (Diesel to fat or grease)
