Could we heat nuclear waste to such a degree one-day, it simply vaporizes? As the United States agree with Great Britain and Australia, Nuclear Energy is a definate key for a green future, however they need help on the waste issue.

So, could we?

  1. What goes up must come down.

so even if you did vaporize it, it would come right back down, think acid rain.

  2. Vaporising and dilution are not the best ways to deal with nuclear waste.  With current technology the waste should be enclased in lead (to block the raditiation) and ceramics(to block the lead).  Ultimately, the best solution is to recycle spent fuel rods, and probably the best place to deal with nuclear waste is as close to the nuclear plant as possible.  Less transport = less cost.

  3. I supposed we could shoot it into the sun, although there are alto logistical issues with that.

  4. Vaporizing it would just take something small and dense and turn it into something lighter with much greater volume.  It would actually be more difficult to store and keep safely.

  5. Yes, it's called a nuclear bomb.

  6. No,  the only logical way to 'dispose' of nuclear waste is to 'dump' it on the moon.
