Question:

Could white sharks be fishing with penguins for seals?

I watched a special on discovery channel during shark week about breeching White sharks around Seal Island. During the show they discussed how White sharks attacked penguins but rarely ate them. They also came across a dead penguin with many bite marks in it floating in the sea. They also mentioned how allot of dead penguins were washing up on shores. Could the sharks be killing the penguins to attract the seals aka seal fishing?

  1. First of all, Jim is wrong.  They are properly known as any of the following:  White sharks, great white sharks, white pointers.

Second of all, I seriously doubt that white sharks are capable of fishing in the sense you're talking about.  If I'm not mistaken, white sharks have very small brains.  (Not unlike Jim.)

  2. You are talking about great white sharks?  That's their correct name, not white sharks.  Yes, they eat penguins.  No they don't use them as bait.  Why would a great white shark bite a penguin?  It can catch, kill and swallow a penguin in one motion.

My thoughts about those dead penguins coming floating ashore is that has been a population explosion of penguins.  There are perhaps too many for the available food.  Or perhaps there has been a collapse in the population of the fish that penguins feed on.  Fish populations are cyclic.  One year class is more numerous than the next.  But I am sure it is NOT great white sharks playing games with them.
