Like, a random one. For example, you were getting bullied and the person wants to fight you (but they don't know martial arts).

  1. knowing a martial art will help in a fight but not necessarily because of any one move that it may have taught you. The real beauty of martial arts is that it teaches you how your body works and so it allows you to react in a natural and purposeful manner. The chances of somebody attacking and you being able to pull of a pretty art basically null. It will not look like a movie even for a master. As soon as you mix Adrenalin and fear all you arts go out the window. Martial arts will help you control your Adrenalin and fear however. So long and short yes but remember somebody with out training is very dangerous because they are unpredictable and don't know that they "should" be doing.

  2. Martial arts are very practical for the street, as long as you find a good gym/dojo

  3. Seems to be a lot of worry on this issue.More worry than it deserves but the answer is yes with a solid 2 years of HARD training 3 to 5 times a week in any system of self defense you should have no problem. You do not have to be a black belt .

Looking at statistics for violent crimes from common assault to murder you will see 99% of the population isn't violent it's the 1% that get the headlines. So it is unlikely you will have to defend yourself anyway.

Many instructors push this more "street worthy" than anyone else bull and people dont realize they are being taken in by sales hype and brand name advertising.

They create a paranoid student who may have been a bit paranoid to begin with into believing the world is full of super secret deadly ninjas out there all lined up to take him out.

    What types are there?

    bullies easily handled

    smart asses easily ignored

If you are training to handle these 2 types and are constantly getting in fights with them the problem may be partially yours.

Bullies are the least serious of predators the most serious being serial killers and they have many traits in common .They look for those weaker than themselves and one psycologist calls them future serial killers and wife and child abusers learning thier skills as most of that type engaged in bullying those weaker than them as kids and being cruel to small animals.

Develope a healthy dose of contempt for these types and they dont seem so scary .And a display or knowledge of skill usually ends thier bullying where you are concerned they will look for easier game to torment.

Smart asses like I said easy to ignore and you will notice they never come close enough to risk being hit They usually do what they do to impress buddies which is another reason to ignore them as you are outnumbered.

There are only a few reasons to fight in the eyes of the law.Defense of property defense of loved ones defense of your life and sucker punch and ambush attacks that leave you no option but to fight.Anything someone says to you or you say to them is not a legal reason to fight. And what you say can be made to seem as instigation to fight by an over zealous prosecuter in court.

  4. Yes.

  5. yo i have me an my friend got jumped by five guys years older than us but were martial artists and i have no natural ability an one of them was like built like the biggest ***** wwe stars an we won

  6. yes as long as you know what your doing

  7. Some people think that some martial arts are useless in real life or a street fight, eg. a common stereotype is that taekwondo cannot be applied in real life. But ALL martial arts can be applied in street fights and real life situations, as long as you know which techniques are applicable. For example, a 720 degree spinning kick probably wont work in real life, but if you practice taekwondo, your kicks are probably going to be very powerful, and could use a kick in a street fight.

Another martial art that people say is useless in real life- brazililan jujitsu. Its a very bad idea to go to the ground in real life, because if you have multiple attackers, your basically open to all sorts of attacks if your on the ground. So you just need to know what techniques you can use in real life. For example, you could use a standing rear naked choke or a guiotine choke in a street fight without going to the ground.

    hope this helps =]

  8. certainly martial arts was created for combat long before they became sport

  9. Ideally, if you train correctly, you SHOULD be able to apply martial arts to any physical confrontation. Now, I say ideally, and "should" because a lot of students build the confidence without the training to back it up, and when it's time to perform, they blank out.

As far as I'm concerned, martial arts is a combat oriented activity and will always be. If you cannot use martial arts to defend yourself, whether in a street fight or mugging, then whats the point?

  10. you should.. or you havent learned ****. thats the point of martial arts.. really they are invented to harm people what ever some may say

  11. Yes most definitely!

But you also need to fully realise that on the street there is no rules period and your mind set should always be geared towards survival as you may face weapons or multiple attackers.

Golden rule... stay aware of your surroundings and avoid run away if allowed, prevention as always is better than cure.

Stay safe and best wishes :)***

  12. It depends on each individual fighter.  Most bullies are terrible fighters, but they're great at being bullies.  Then, there are some bullies who act the way they do because they have true fighting talent.  In that case it might not matter how much martial arts training the other person has.  Despite that, I'm a firm believer in everyone taking some style of martial arts.  It might not always help, but it's always worth studying.

  13. I think it would help if you know it

  14. I have applied my martial arts training in quite a few street fights, to avoid them. Training in karate has given me the strength not to have to rise to the challenge and puff my chest out and fight to protect my ego, which is what you are talking about.

If the person actually talks first, you have a 99% chance of avoiding the fight, as long as you do not let your ego take over. If a person tries to challenge you or get you to fight, chances are if you back down and don't challenge his ego to a duel, you will not have to fight.

A street fight is a clash of ego's, and takes 2 willing participants, and is stupid, and only leads to assorted secondary problems eventually. Example: Jail time, legal bills, medical bills, lost time from school or work, either through expultion or injury. not to mention accidents happen and death's have occured in innocent street fights.

Self defense is where there is no other option but to fight, and generally you will not have any advance dwarning, like somebody bullying you or wanting you to fight, and then it is not about ego, it is about surviving to go home to my family who loves me.

Realize there are rules on the street, they are called laws. break them and jail is a likely possibility. i have seen more then one street fight that windes up with both parties in jail. What kind of sense does that make? one law says that for self defense you are only allowed legally to do what is necessary to get safely out of the situation.

There is a huge difference between street fighting and self defense, which sadly not many people on here seem to realize.

  15. martial arts are just for self defence and not for the sake of show of strength , if any one tries to harm you then it is ur duty to defend ur self
