I'm planning to go to medical school when i've finished school and sixth form, but i've already got 2 of my poems published in anthologies through a school competition and another competition i entered at the library.

So could i do both at the same time?

  1. yes

  2. William Carlos Williams, one of the most respected and innovative American poets of the 20th century, who won the Pulitzer and other prizes for his work, was a successful pediatrician and general physician.

In other words, of course you can!

  3. Of course you can!  You can write poetry in your spare time.

  4. Of course. I do corporate finance and am an artist. We all need a hobby/passion/outlet in our lives. Who knows you may even consider being a poet a viable career option.

    Go Girl !

  5. Yes, you can do anything you set your mind to.

  6. Hey that's amazing. Most people barely manage to do one thing at a time. Did you know that one of the greatest poets of all times(my favourite poet), John Keats, was a doctor. He never had the chance to practice though. He was put to work with a medical practitioner but preferred to devote his time to poetry. It's a pity he died so young(at age 26). He probably would have practiced as doctor and been a poet at the same time.

Hope this helps and good luck!

  7. Yes,why not!

  8. of course - but be prepared to have very little time to write poetry while in your final years of medical uni, and first years as a qualified doctor!

you won't be able to devote yourself to it full-time, but when you get to the stage of having free time you'll certainly be able to do both - why wouldn't you?

  9. Hey, well you're in the same position as me: I'm hoping to read medicine next year, and poetry is a big thing in my life too (like you, I am also a published poet!) I am pretty sure that I can be a great doctor and a great poet. I think that the experiences I will have as a doctor will give me things to write about (meeting people everyday from all walks of life.)

Good luck with both medicine and your writing!

  10. You definitely can be both! =D Being a doctor would come first, though, since that's a larger commitment. You'll be very busy, but you can always manage to squeeze in time for leisure activities, such as poetry.

Writing poetry comes from within, so you can take more time to compose. Good composition shouldn't be rushed, so you can just take your sweet time.

    There's NO restriction that if you're a doctor, you can't be a poet. ^_^

  11. yes. Arthur Conan Doyle has proved it could be done. Except he's writing books.

  12. Theodor Seuss Geisel was a doctor and wrote Children's books, so anything is possible.

  13. Yes-you are obviously very talented and creative so your poetry can be written in your spare time.

  14. yeah, everything's possible, kudos to you for being planned!

*you could write poems about blood transfusions!!* jk!

  15. Why not, seems you are already a schoolgirl and a poet.  : -- )
