The only way I could see it working is if you stabbed it in the eye with the toothpick.  Otherwise the bear will rape you.

if it was made of metal and you managed to make the bear swallow it or maybe you could like throw the tooth pick like a dart and aim for it's eye?

but if i was randomly attacked by on, and all i had was a toothpick.......id try to jab it in the b*****d's neck!

yet i dont think anyone would succeed.....

I once held a curious one at bay with a nine foot long warspear, but that's no toothpick. The only way to use toothpicks against a bear would be to plant them in the path, anchored in the soil and pointing up, coated with poison, and pray one of them slips between the thick pads to jab him in the softer flesh under and between his claws. Even jabbing him in the eye with one is no good - he might drop you, but then again he might rip your throat out. If you are so close as to be physically attacking him with a toothpick, then he is no doubt crushing you in a "bear hug" with arms that can crack ribs and major bones, mauling you with three inch long teeth, and ripping at you with four inch claws, four to a paw. If you are that close you are dead. Thank goodness the one that investigated me was only curious, not hungry or protecting its territory or cubs. If that had been the case I would be dead or severely crippled.

Well, believe it or not...the Bowie Knife was often referred to as the

"Arkansas Toothpick".

And some professional bear hunters were crazy enough to try to

hunt bear with only a knife or hand ax.  This "Extreme Sport" version

of bear hunting may have started about the time of Daniel Boone.
