Could you give me suggestions on how to advertise my group more effectively?

You can put the link to the group on your personal website if you have one, in the signature line of your e-mail program.  If you belong to other groups you can get permission from the other owners to post the link to your group.  If you have friends that you think would be interested in the group you can send invitations to them by going to the group homepage and click on "Invite".  You can send up to 100 invitations per day.

add the promote code to web pages you may have, create free pages making them same topic as your group just to add the promote code- make sure you use key words for searches it titles.

add the link to your profiles

add the link to your mail signature

make sure it's in the Yahoo directory

do not add it it group sharing sites unless you want alot of spammers

gaining members takes time, and  continuous work for some topic groups.
