Could you give me your opinion on my first day as a Golfer?

I took my first Golf lesson today. (3 for £50)

I started by using a machine called "the Explanar"- which shows you how to swing properly. Then my instructor told me stance and grip.

Then it was time to hit my first ever Golf Shot. I used a 7 Iron and my first shot was airborne 150 yards and dead straight. My first ever golf shot.

I hit sixty balls and all of them went about 150 yards. Not all of them were straight but I was really proud and happy that I seemed to do well at first time

I havent used any other Iron or driver or putter but optimistic

I must say that the Instructor was really good

How long do you think it will take before Im ready to leave the driving range and practice green and play a round??

  1. well i did the same thing  go to the range about 5 times then play a par 3 course because so u can get more practice

  2. Even without a single lesson or hitting a golf ball before your ready for your first round of golf.  I can drive a golf ball 270-300 yards, set myself up for a  2 under i always end up going 70 over from the greens.  All I'm saying is i don't expect too much from myself for something which is just a bit of fun.  But you done very good from one lesson.  The only thing you have to worry about on a golf course is the Sunday golf bores, if your on the tee off and they're behind you don't listen to anything they say.  Every golf amateur is suddenly a pro when they see a novice.  I'm sure you have a local council 9 hole course, do that as an 18er play 9 up then back again shouldn't cost more than a tenner.  Don't be fooled into paying 70 quid for 18 holes on a PGA rated golf course without a handicap.

  3. Keep Hitting at the range with all your clubs until about half to 3/4 of your shots are gettting good distance consticanly and pretty straight then go to a little par 3 course and play until you can move up to the pga courses and soon youll be a pro

  4. you should stay at the range until u have consistent yardages with each club then go give it a "shot" :)

  5. Your better than me and I play off 12.

  6. Sounds like you had a good day.  It went better than most people's first day.  Give it a month and then give the course a try.  I don't know what it is about playing for real as opposed to practice, but when I first started, there were days as if I never practiced before.  One day I told myself at the range that I can do this on the course.  Golf is the same as anything else.  You will have your good days and your bad days.

  7. Sounds ok, keep up practicing................but there is something about playing for real, a person forgets all they learned.    lol.

  8. WOW you must be good.

Just read magazines like Todays Golfer and Golf World, they have loads of tips.

Keeps doing your lessons and have one regulary.

Practice, practice, practice. The most important thing.

  9. Keep at it.  It sounds like you're doing OK already!  Good luck & enjoy.

  10. Wow, I'd say that within a couple of weeks you'd be really ready, but there are thousands of golfers that go out for a round without even a lesson.  They just hit all of their different clubs on the driving range for an hour...putt around for an hour...chip for an hour and then off to golf.

I'd say take another couple of lessons to learn the driver, putter and chip shots.  Then play small courses to develop your iron and short game.

  11. Good start - but finish the lessons - and don't forget you are a beginner.

It could be you are 'a natural' - as some are - but I'd suggest you remain patient and don't get ahead of yourself.

There's a lot of difference between a range and an actual course - and you'd be well advised to pay the utmost respect to what can be a most frustratingly difficult game.

I had a course of 6 lessons - as a raw beginner, some 35 years ago - until the Pro said I was fit to go forth and play.

    Actual experience was a nightmare.

I entered a Monthly Medal - ran up 13 shots on the 3rd hole - feeling pretty silly and embarrassed I couldn't hit a 7 iron from a down-hill lie, across a ditch - and feeling all the worse when one of the other competitors caustically commented he was surprised someone so incapable was allowed to even enter the competition.

He was unkind - but quite right, of course.

Whilst I kept skidding the ball into the ditch,

he had to wait to play his next shot - and lost his patience after about 5 minutes - conscious that another 3-ball was hard on our heels - waiting to play their next shots.

I seem to remember my 1st Medal score was a rather forgettable 144 - a nightmare that comes back to haunt me even now.

    But a salutory lesson.

There are 2 good golf quotes well worth bearing in mind:-

    "It's a game of mishits."

    and

" Funnily enough - the more I practise the luckier I seem to get."

Hope that helps - and you enjoy the game.

  12. Sounds good now go and buy yourself stupid clothes tartan trousers and a cowboy hat oh yes and a t shirt with a hawaian sunset on it,you could round the outfit off with pink shoes..........sounds crazy eh? well this outfit is acceptable on EVERY golf course in the WORLD!!! the beautiful sport of golf is controlled by the elderly and their opinion of NICE clothes. You really won't believe your eyes as you enter this sport......very very tasteless dress codes. The old people ruin this sport THEY DRESS VERY VERY BADLY.And when it comes to the young they must adapt or leave the sport so you will see young people wearing a white belt to express fashion?? what is that all about? I say kick the elderly out of golf!!

  13. To be able to hit your first ever golf balls all around 150yards on average is great.

Average golfers will hit a 7 iron around 140-160.

So your already hitting the ball far.

Your instructor will get you hitting straighter more consitenly over time along with practice.

Keep at it, and I think your ready to get on a course now and see how you do around the course.

  14. Sounds like you're doing very well indeed. Most people can't even hit the ball on their first lesson, I know I couldn't. I would stick with a course of maybe a dozen lessons before venturing out on a proper course as there is still much more about the game that you will need a basic understanding of. Ask your pro when he thinks you're ready and then ask him to play 9 holes with you when the course is quiet. That way he can tell you about all the etiquette an stuff. After that, go for it. I wish you well.
