Could you help me to find application software for running dvd and vedio cd in linux notebook?

the note book is compaq 6710s. with dvd R/W. i am unable to run dvd and vedio cd. whic application software is suitable to me?

  2. you need the right codecs and dvdlibs installed most distros leave these out linux mint has these preinstalled thats why I use it dont get me wrong they can be installed in any distro I just took the easy way out and just for the record some distros try to get you to buy software for this there are free versions out there they are just a little harder to install and setup depending on what distro you are running

  3. I would suggest Mplayer. It's a bit venerable, but really easy to use, and has wider codec support and more options than VLC. Make sure you get SMplayer or GMplayer too, for they're the graphical frontend to what's a terminal video player at heart. You'll also need the code package, likely called win32codecs. Ask in your distro forums where it is. It'll often be in a private repository with other legaly grey area or bad license software.
