  1. Well.. I doubt it would hinder learning so the answer is yes

Could you fly after only having trained using Microsoft's Flight Simulator?  Probably not, I would think it would be better than nothing though in an emergency situation.

  2. Microsoft Flight Sim is a great "training aid" for practicing elements of flying... how to navigate, how to flying in bad weather using just instruments (Instrument Flying), familiarising yourself with a new airport etc... but whilst it is definately fun (and I'm a big sim fan myself), there are things it just can't teach you.

If you go up in a real aircraft, you will feel the aircraft move, the acceleration, the turbulance... And this "feel" is extremely important to flying. Also, MSFS is not completely accurate when it comes to landing and takeoff... and the air traffic control leave a lot to be desired too. hat's why "full motion simulators" as used by airlines to train thier flight crews are used.

There has however been research done in the UK with new pilots... those who had flown and practiced on MSFS before thier first real flight were able to make a flight with minimal help from the instructor... help was still needed though.

Basically, MSFS is a great training aid and will help you to understand a lot... but no substitute for real training.

  3. PC based flight simulators are not a satisfactory method for learning to fly a real airplane.  The flight simulator really does not give you any sort of feel for how a real airplane behaves, and it might actually throw you off more than it would help you.

They are useful for practicing instrument flight procedures after you already have some flight hours in real airplanes, but the usefulness of what you learn from the simulator would be very limited if you had never handled a real airplane before.

That is as charitably as I can put it.

  4. Depends on how easily you can pick it up..I can garentee that you won't be able to jump right into a 747 and be able to fly it with no help at all but possibly a small cessna or something. Sure FS will give you an example of how it works but the physics are not going to be exact. Don't plan on flying until you have gone to flight school.

  5. Its a Good Training aide and may get you ahead of some people when it comes to flight school. Does that mean you can fly a Plane like the 757? Probably not. I use it for my Instrument training and what not.
