Question:

Could you live in a world without alcohol?

I've recently given up drinking beer at least until I lose a bit more weight, and it hasn't bothered me as much as I thought it would.

Makes me wonder if all that nonsense outside pubs and clubs every night, drink drivers, pressure on the NHS, domestic violence is worth the freedom to drink alcohol. Would society be better off with prohibition?

  1. prohibition doesn't eliminate alcohol it just sends it underground and gives control of it to the bootleggers and the mob and it makes it cool what with the underground speakeasy's and all

  2. Nope. xD

  3. Don't get me wrong I love going out and drinking, but I don't need it. If it became illegal it wouldn't bother me too much, you'd get used to it.

  4. if you prohibit alcohol people will not stop drinking.  they will just get the alcohol illegally.  it will cost them a lot more, so they will have to steal to support thier habit.  gangs fight over the turf to sell the stuff at highly inflated profit so there is gang warfare. then dont forget about how since it is illegal the alcohol will be of unpure content and unknown percentage of alcohol, therefore more people will get sick and ill from the product. but people will still drink.  its the same thing that happened when we made alcohol illegal in the first place. and its the same thing that is happening now with drug prohibition.

  5. Yes, but I'd be against it.

  6. yup

  7. yes

  8. You're kidding right? Have you read about Prohibition?

There is no way I could live without alcohol....on so many levels.  What a living h**l of a world that would be.

  9. yes i could

but making somethind illegal glamourises it and increases crime

think Prohibition , bath tub gin , Al Capone built an empire on illegal drink

  10. I've thought about this kind of thing. Alcohol seems to have many more disadvantages than advantages, the only advantage possibly being the buzz you get and the confidence that follows. But let's face it, hangovers aren't fun, vomiting while hammered isn't fun, drunken fights aren't fun, having to tolerate those who get lairy after a few sherberts is definitely not fun! And countless other reasons. And like you say, it really doesn;t help if you are trying to lose weight.

So to be honest, I think it would do people the world of good if it wasn't available anymore. Or if it was at least rationed or something!

I too am considering giving it a miss for a while. Mostly because, after weighing up the pros and cons, not drinking is starting to look much more appealing than drinking!

And I was a bit concerned that I might find it difficult but I feel better now you say it's not that bad! Great!

  11. prohibition pah, not all people who drink are violent and people who become violent while drunk should not drink in the first place, as for drunk drivers most people are sensible but some idiots still get behind the wheel,

  12. yes i could.. coke is my alcohol!

  13. ummm.....NO.....keep alcohol....some people are a$$es when they get drunk but ot everyone does....there are alot of people who can just enjoy having a few beers and relaxing dont let the dumb a$$es ruin it fo reveryone else..!!! i mean i can handle gettin $hit faced and still be very pleasant....plus it was once tried to ban alcohol and see how that turned out...??!!

its deff not worth it to ban alcohol..!!! DUH...!!!

plus if they did bann it people would find a way to still get it...i mean look at weed that is illegal and ALOT af people still smoke...includin me and it is  pretty easy to get....and yes alcohol would be harder to get if illegalized but we would find a way...!!

  14. It would be easy to abstain as I don't drink a lot but I'd be out of work as I run a pub!

There are many people who drink responsibly, are not violent and who don't drain the NHS.I've been in the pub business for many years and I'm lucky I suppose to be able to say I have had little trouble in or outside my establishments.

It's illegal to serve someone who is drunk and I believe some of the problems are caused by pubs and clubs not acting responsibly and just looking at profit!

There will always be some who abuse substances, who are lacking education in the dangers, but I don't see why the minority should be responsible for taking the pleasures of the sensible away.

Domestic violence has been around since before my time and it wasn't always drink related.

  15. People have to quit for the right reasons, a good book to help anyone quit the right way is Allen Carr's Easy Way to Control Alcohol. It's easy and brilliant!

Banning people makes people resentful and are inclined to drink more.

  16. Yes,

My uncle is 32 and he is "straightedge"

he has been since he was 13.

it just proves alcohol isn't a "must"

  17. yes alcoholics can do without alcohol

  18. Yes.

  19. NO....

  20. Yes. I enoy it every now and then but it's something that I don't indulge in on a regular basis.

  21. I drank when I was younger and do not now, and I do not miss it. My daughter is also a recovered a and drug addict and she has never looked, felt, or been happier.

  22. Society would not be better with prohibition.

  23. ~What do we see in the world around us? Overcrowding. Interpersonal conflicts. Economic uncertainty. International strife. Uncertainty about the future. A gnawing sense of helplessness. These factors add up to create what is described as future shock—a vague, continuous feeling of anxiety. It’s a condition that can be described as the disease of change.

~an sometimes alcohol takes the edge off of it all.  ÃƒÂ¢Ã‚€ÂœThe use of mood-altering chemicals in America, and to some extent in other developed countries, has run completely wild. Cultures we are pleased to label ‘primitive’ all without exception reserve the use of tobacco, drugs and intoxicants for special occasions such as celebration and rituals. Only in the so-called advanced cultures do we use these chemically induced altered states of awareness as routine means for escaping reality.”

~Stress is not necessarily a negative force. After all, stress is not just what happens to us, but how we react to what happens to us. And how we react is controlled by our mind and emotions.

~Why would a person want to take something harmful into his body? Why would a rational human being want to dull his senses and cloud his judgment? In a world given to drowning its sorrows in alcohol and drugs, helping people to forget the harsh realities of life and allowing them to enjoy a brief moment of happiness brought about by drink. For many people, the problems of this world are too much to bear. Having no faith, or not enough faith to sustain them and give them hope, they turn to drinking.

~we began to question, whether perhaps drinking alcohol was the best thing for us to do, even though it was not yet forbidden, and many stopped drinking from this time onward. Drunkenness began to be seen as something shameful and not befitting the high moral standards.

~It is harmful to us. physically, and it also harms us as people. Why would we, need to take solace in drink? One of the saddest features of life in the Western world, for example, is how workers look forward all week long to the end of the week when they can go out together to the pub. This often leads to drunkenness and a lowering of one's guard, which in turn leads to other bad behaviors. How sad that many people, because of loneliness and depression, turn to drink and to drugs to fill in that desperate need for affection or fulfillment in life. What a tragedy that alcohol has torn apart families and broken many lives and careers.

~The fact is that people crave happiness and they will find it in whatever form they know. The pursuit of material things, the relentless urge to improve one's position at the expense of others and the desperate need to be wanted are all symptoms of a society without faith. For Muslims, there is no need for drugs or strong drink. Happiness comes from strong family values and for the respect which we give to each other as true brothers and sisters. The real happiness in life, though, comes from Almighty Allah, the source of all goodness. We can show the rest of the world what life is really about by the way we live as good Muslims

  24. They already tried that, and it didn't work:)  .... It's too late now to try to reform the entire human race, so that's purely a hypothetical question ......Personally, I could definitely live without alcohol, since I only drink (at most) 1 margarita a month........

  25. I could, I gave up to lose weight and  don't miss it. Just have a drink on birthdays and at Christmas now.

  26. personally, i can live without alcohol.

    But scientifically, alcohol is necessary.

it helps us in so many ways. we just ruin it by consuming it. it has great chemical values
