Could you maybe surf with an air tank?

So that the undertow would kill you? Because I know some of the waves that surfers ride would kill them had they falled. What would happen if they tried to wear an air tank while surfing, wouldn't that greatly reduce their chances of death by drowning?

  1. Actually, I believe some of the guys that ride really big waves, (Jaws, Cortez Banks, etc) use a small rescue bottle thats good for a couple of minutes of air.

Thanks for clearing that up B-Money, that must have been what I was (incorrectly) remembering.

  2. Surfer Mag had an interview with Laird Hamilton, arguably the most famous big wave rider, and he discussed the future of big wave surfing.  In it, he discussed the possibility of carrying a small air cannister on you.  He pretty much said it is a bad idea and that is why they decided to use PFD's instead when they tow surf in monster waves.

Linked is the full article.  It is very interesting.  The air tank portion is the first question on page 3.

  3. that would be so bulky. most surfers who die are new to the sport. every surfer I know is an excelent swimmer and is very knowledgeable about wave patterns, undertoes, rip currents, rip tides and the like

  4. That would be really hard to have on your back at all times.  Me I scuba and use 2 tanks and I can bearly stand up haha try surfing, doubt it.

  5. nah don't worry about it.  just don't surf alone, and in giant waves.  usually guys who ride big waves have their jet-ski buddies zoom in and pick them up before the next waves come.
