IR satellite images can show you what is beneath the sand.

Some desert frogs can hibernate for decades in between the rain storms.

Palo verde trees are each genetically distinct.  And have green bark.

Cacti are tasty.

Food grows underground at certain times of the year.

Really tasty...

Of all places to live, a desert can sustain a small population without the population doing much work. Meaning that one can depend on nature with only the effort of searching to survive.

This of course is true in perfect conditions, but is harder in the normal variant conditions of real life.
