Could you please explain to me binary word length and quantization in english?

I'm looking at an explanation of it, but I don't really understand it.

1 character (1 or 0) is a bit

2 bits is a nibble (half a byte)

2 nibbles (4 bits) is a byte

2 bytes is a word (8 bits)

2 words is a longword (16 bits)

2 longwords is a double-longword (32 bits)

These definitions are over 20 years old.  There may be additions or changes.
