    List of German noble houses

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Ge...

A Royal House (noble house) were traditional used as family names by royalty. It generally represents the members of a family in various senior and junior or cadet branches, who are loosely related but not necessarily of the same immediate kin. Unlike most westerners, many of the world's royal families do not have family names, and those that have adopted them rarely use them. They are referred to instead by their titles, often related to an area ruled or once ruled by that family.

  2. von Hohenzollern  (the former German Imperial Family's name).

Basically anything starting with von is an aristocratic German surname - equivalent of the French "de".

  3. Captain Ernst Fritz von Schietzenheusen.

  4. Windsor

  5. There is no single complete list. There are THOUSANDS of German aristocratic families. Sometimes "von" or "zu" is a sign that a family is noble but not always. If you are wondering if a particular family is noble, try consulting the Genealogisches Handbuch des Adels, the Almanach de Gotha or the Neues Allgemeines Deutsches Adels-Lexicon to see if a family is listed.

Also, Rachelle has it wrong, as usual. A noble or royal house name is not always a surname.

  6. Does no one know who Queen Victoria's mother was then? tut tut

  7. 1) Sax-Coburg-Gotta ;

    2)Van der Bilt

  8. Fighter Ace, The Baron Manfred Von Richthofen - otherwise known as the Red Baron, is probably the most famous German Aristocrat.  A hero fighter ace of WW-One.  He was shot down by an Australian rifleman and was buried with full military honours in accordance with custom and in recognition of his rank.

The number one squadron in the German Air Force today is the Richthofen Squadron.

Baron Manfred Von Richthofen was held in the very highest esteem both by the British and the Australians - the Australians were lavish with his Military Funeral.

  9. How do I rule thee, let me Count der vays mein Leibelinche.

  10. Von Turn und Taxis.

  11. Since Germany is essentially made up of a collection of principalities, I googled the words "German princes". However, I also remembered a couple of aristocratic surnames from history:  Bismarck (unified Germany) and Von Steuben  (served with George Washington).  Texans will also recall that Baron Gottfried Hans Von Meusebach renounced his title and became John Meusebach when he settled Fredericksburg, Texas, after the failed Revolution of 1848.

Incidentally, Vanderbilt is Dutch not German.  The German equivalent of "Van" is "Von" as in Von Trapp (of "Sound of Music" fame).

  12. von Richtoven . ( check it ) also known as the red Baron .

SAXE COBURG are a good saxon lot , not their fault WW11 .

WITTELSBACH ( check that too )

  13. Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg : the surname of the royal houses of Greece, Denmark and British (Prince Philip's correct surname if he had any should be this because this was the house he originally belonged to)

Battenberg : currently anglicized to Mountbatten

    Hesse-Cassel

    Saxe-Coburg-Gotha: anglicized to Windsor

    Hanover

  14. try our current royal family,,,,formerly the Saxe-Coburgs,,,,,in view of the fact we had two world wars with Germany they changed it to Windsor so they would be considered more "english" and less German

  15. Hans Fitzneitzentite.
