Could you please help identify this spider?

This spider is hanging out above our garage (in the Detroit, Michigan area), and we were wondering what kind it is, because if it isn't poisonous, it certainly is big and ugly!

  2. It&#039;s a type of orb-weaving spider, they&#039;re really common in the US and are harmless.  

  3. It is definitely a type of Orb Weaver/Wheel weaver (Family Araneidae).  They typically make a flat vertical web where flying insects are present.

    Some types may look a little alarming, but they are completely harmless to humans.  If they do bite (which could almost only happen if you try to get bit) it is similar to a bee sting.

    admire them from afar.  They will keep mosquitos, and other flying pest numbers down.
