photoshop ctrl+L for the first photo and move the white and black arrows at bottom of the graph

second photo do the same plus crop tool (C) to remove the white thing at bottom

ACDsee Pro2 is far easier, and in my mind far superior for adjusting lighting curves - balancing by bringing shadows up, as well as compressing (dimming sky that is too bright and allowing areas around it not to be dimmed).
