  1. most common is when bumble bees (honey bees) stop on different flowers to drink nectar.  when they do that, some of the pollen that is inside of the middle of the flower shakes loose and falls onto the bee's wings.

then the bee flies to a different flower and while taking in more food, some of the pollen falls into THAT flower (and so on), which cross breeds flowering plants.

the pollen of one flower, for example, a sunflower, will not pollinate a morning glory, for instance, because their DNA is different.  that would be like trying to make a fully human being out of the sperm cell of a gorilla and the egg cell out of a female human being.  the number of chromosomes will not match, so no pollination of the morning glory will occur.

if, however, the bee has visited a morning glory flower, its pollen will fall off into the next morning glory flower, which will make it reproduce via the stamen and pistil parts of the flower/plant.  you can consider them to be female and male parts.

there is no truly successful substitute for the bumble (honey) bee.  hummingbirds and wasps do not go from flower to flower over and over again (have you ever watched them?) often.

cross pollination is the correct way to grow flowers or those that exist prior to a fruit or vegetable replacing the flower, because otherwise, the bees would be pollinating relatives of one flower.  the reason that species exist is that there is cross breeding, and not inbreeding, which in turn makes the offspring weak or too sick to survive.
