I am off to Rome for 3 nights, then Sorrento for 7 soon & i'm trying to find some decent guide books for the trip - with details of sights to see, useable maps & walking guides etc. Could anybody recommend some please as there are so many different ones and i don't want to waste money on something which is useless or outdated!

  1. If I do any research I use DK Eyewitness guidebooks. They are easy to read and have good information on a wide variety of subjects. I don't bring them with me, rather photocopy relevant pages to take with me. It saves space and keeps the books nice.

What I do take with me is a laminated map with a map of the metro. It's something you can put in a backpack and it's not going to get crushed and wilted in the rain.

I usually end up with a huge list of things to do. I use the internet to cull the list by getting second opinions.

The first thing I do is find a hotel on the internet. I'll look at a number of sites, but tripadvisor.com has been doing well for me. I use google earth to locate my hotel, the nearby metro stations, recommended restaurants and attractions. I use placemarks to save my reference points. Mostly, I know what I'm going to see, it's the logistics of getting there which is the problem.

  2. Stan gave it to you.  DK.  All the way.  They have country books and cities.  Beautiful photos, great diagrams and drawings, terrific information, where to go, what to do, what to eat, what to expect.  Which monuments cost (though they don't tell you how much, because that changes) what their hours are and if they have free days.

Check online for actual entrance fees.  There you can find up to date.
