Even just to get your foot in the door, and then take hours or classes to become certified in pre-k-3rd for your master's?

  1. Early childhood special education is what you need to look for in a program.  More and more schools are offering a licensure in that area.

To get your foot in the door depends upon your state, but most states will offer a conditional license which includes a intro to special ed class, a policy class, and a few others depending on what your state requires.  If you have the licensure in K-12, you more than likely have the coursework for conditional license.

  2. If there is not a licensed Preschool Special Education Teacher available - it is possible that you would be granted a variance from the state.  Typically the school that hires you would have to apply for it on your behalf.

  3. the way it is here where i live, you must be certified in sped to teach sped.....unless they are unable to find a cert.  at that point, they can hire a teacher certified to teach those grades as long as they approve an emergency certificate for sped.  at that point, you can keep the emer. cert. as long as you take classes to be certified.  but, the emer. cert. may not be approved for everywhere.

  4. Each state has their own specific guidelines.  I am a spec ed teacher in texas and am certified PK-12 Generic special education.  this allows me early childhood as well as through 12th grade.  Hope that answered your question to some small degree
