Is anyone having trouble getting a wheely bin & recycling box from their local council? We've been given an indefinite date for boxes and 8 months for a bin. The local council say there's been a fire at the depot in Europe where they get the bins from and there's no other supplier. They won't take the rubbish cos it's not binned, & won't take the recycling cos it not boxed. They'll take the bagged recycling, but that only covers certain items. They want us to take it 3 miles to a re-cycling depot. Help!

  1. Hi.

I'm not gonna give detail but basically there was a French plastic bin manufacturer's buildings that burnt down. As a Country and even into Europe there is a shortage. AND I MEAN SHORTAGE!

it's a first come first served situation but they should have sorted you out by now. Tell them that you expect a refuse service and even if they fail to provide a bin, you have a right to leave waste for collection as long as the circumstances continue

  2. Apart from sympathising I am not sure what to suggest.

Waiting 8 weeks for a wheelie bin seems outrageous and ridiculous - Why is there only one supplier of these bins in all of Europe ? I read a newspaper report a week or so ago about someone in your situation who found a wheelie bin supplier in Germany (via the web) imported one for less than their council normally charged and then were threatened with fines for using unauthorised bins !*?

If I were you I would get hold of your Councillor and remind them that Councils have a legal duty to remove domestic rubbish and you're also paying Council tax for the privilege.

If some private organisation with similar statutory/contractual

obligations failed to fulfil thyem you would have some redress why should the Council be any different.

  3. If you really want to recycle and there is this shortage of bins you will have to go to the center instead. I imagine with the newspapers getting involved and the frustration of the citizens you may see some relief, albeit comic relief, in the near future, hopefully less than 8 months. Good luck and hang in there.
