Valve confirm that gamers on the PlayStation 3 will not be able to pit it out against players on PCs in CS: GO after the developer scrapped the feature.
Counter-Strike is the fairytale story of a mod that became so mainstream that almost every PC gamer in the world has played at one point or the other in their life. In fact, even console gamers do not mind a bit of CS from time to time.
The mod, which is now a game by its own right, was created using code from another iconic video game in the PC world, Half-Life.
Now, over a decade later, the game is set to receive a full-fledged sequel titled, Counter Strike: Global Offensive and sees the return of the classic gameplay mechanics that made the original a revelation for PC gamers.
This time around however, the game will not be available exclusively to PC gamers as it will be launched on the Mac, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 as well, with no confirmation on a Nintendo Wii U version of the title as yet.
However, one of the features that PlayStation 3 gamers were looking forward to the most has been scrapped. When the game was revealed the developers surprised everyone by stating that PC gamers could take on PS3 gamers in online competitive multiplayer matches
in what would have been the first mainstream cross-platform title to allow gaming in such a manner.
Sadly for all those who were excited by this bit of news, it turns out that the cross-platform feature has been scrapped in favour of better post purchase support.
Chet Faliszek, one of the gentlemen from Valve, stated, “The beta has proved we want to update not just the beta, but the game itself post-launch frequently on the PC. To do that, we need to separate the platforms so one doesn’t hamstring the other. So for
that, we have removed the idea of cross-platform play – essentially make all platforms stronger by not mixing them.”
While it may be a blow to gamers who were looking forward to cross-platform gaming the fact that it was a part of Valve’s plan at one point means that the day of PC versus PlayStation 3 players playing against each other is not far away.
