Question:

Countering BJJ?? Suggestions?

I'm going to fight a guy who is really good with BJJ & takedown techniques..

Let's say the fight goes to the ground because of the guy's desperate attempts to keep the fight on the ground.

Besides using takedown defense, such as sprawl, etc, & we're on the ground already, what measures should I take to stop the guy form using his BJJ against me or countering it?

Is there a way to counter it? How? I'm familiar with BJJ, I'm only a whitebelt in BJJ because I just started for about a month.. The guy I'm fighitng is somewhere near a purple or brown, not too sure. I'm wondering if there is a way of me winning on the ground, just incase I can't keep the fight standing, although I will do everything I can to keep it standing, i.e. working on takedown defense, etc.

  1. If your opponent is a brown belt in bjj, you're probably not going to win. your best bet is to try and stay on your feet and keep sticking your jab.  bjj fighters tend to lunge in with their heads down in an effort to gain control and take you down.  try to keep you lead leg to the outside of their lead leg.  this prevents them from shooting straight in. it probably won't even matter because if he grabs you, you're done anyway.  no offense.

  2. hope your standup and sprawls are really good, because if youre a white belt and he's purple or brown, that isnt a very good chance. maybe the best thing to do is just get him in guard and hold him closely not letting him move until the ref will stand you both up.  this will take alot of energy but otherwise you dont stand much chance. any counters you attempt will be fairly futile. best thing to do would be to not fight until your ground game increases.

  3. If this is competition continue reading, if this is a real fight then I am going to say just don't throw down with the dude.

I'd be worried if a guy wanted to go down and use his BJJ against me... not my cup of tea.

Humorous, yet inappropriate comments aside, he just has more experience than you. This will be a tough fight if it goes to the ground unless the guy is weak (physically or more importantly in his game).

If this fight goes to ground I can only suggest keeping your chin tucked in and do not at any time fully extend any limb.

When he is shooting for the take down, you can use the opportunity to try to lock in a good guillotine or other such choke.

Aside from that, like i said before, just play defense and don't give anything up.

  4. Do not just use BJJ. If you limit yourself to using a system against a system then you are going to be beaten by a more experienced fighter every time. In terms of BJJ, it is totally defeatable but you must use something they are not ready for or go beyond the limitations of the single mentality of a system into the realm of what works. Even the Gracies didn't just use their system in the UFC fights. They used whatever works.

  5. If his striking is good too, you might not want to fight him.

The only defense for BJJ is BJJ

  6. I assume you have time to work technique before the fight - a few weeks hopefully.  You want to try to keep the fight in the area where you are strongest relative to your opponent.  Sounds like standup/striking is it.  If you start striking on the ground, remember he's probably got better control - you don't want to trade punches on the ground.

I'd say work on getting the fight back to standing and striking.  Forget about trying to roll with the guy - he's got you beat if you are on the ground. Shooting / takedowns take a lot of energy.  Make him tired by standing up over and over, and pick him apart on your feet.  Keep your shots quick and your combos short. Be ready to sprawl.  Don't over-commit when you punch.

IF you can keep standing it back up, after a few takedowns and failed attempts he'll get tired.  Tired people start telegraphing their shots, and once you can read it you can stuff it.

  7. The best counter to a shot is an eye gouge. Just put your lead hand out and catch his face then try to get a finger into the eye socket.

From there you can control him by the eye socket and punch him out.

    OR

Try to get him to pull guard, then knee the groin as much as possible. Its a wide open target that should mess him up pretty good.
