Country Fair update?

Hi Everyone!

I wanted to drop you a line from my time at the fair. This is not exactly a horse question, but you are the only folks here I care about.

I have a dairy goat exhibit going on for the next week, or until we collapse, whichever comes first. Its called the Joy of Dairy Goats. (ok you can stop laughing now...me and the "girls" are sooo tired already)

Our exhibit is part "petting zoo" the children can pet the goats and try their hands at milking and other educational endeavors

I was talking with another exhibitor today and learned something I have never heard of before. This person told me about the problem they are having with feral pigs. These are pigs that have escaped from farms and have regressed back into their feral state, apparently within one or two generations. They are aggressive and have been know to kill young stock including calves, kids and foals and eat them. I have never heard of this before, but thought it was interesting enough to tell you about.

Please excuse my rambling. Its nearly 11 pm here and I have to be up again in 7 hours. Hope to see you at the Fair!

  1. Hope your having a good time and thanks for giving the update...Good Luck!

  2. Hm... Sounds like your having fun. I show ducks too and all the little kids want to pet them! When I am getting tired and want to put them away I have to tell them that a petting zoo is in the next barn... I guess they are just too cute!

Ha ha, My friend that had a few goats at our fair showed me how to milk one. I then accidentally squirted her and we ended up having a milk fight and being milk covered smelly and gross!

I don't think we have a problem with feral pigs here where I live... I think a while ago there was a few that escaped and were shot by the DNR but didn't have any killings reported by them though...

hm... Now I want a ham sandwich or a BLT would do too...

  3. Hope your having a good time, and good luck at the fair.

Once while out deer hunting I was treed by about 4 feral hogs. I had walked by where they where bedded down and I guess I surprise them. Lucky for me there was a tree that I could climb near by. Needless to say we had quite a bit of ham by the time I was able to get out of the tree. Them are ornery critters.

  4. I was just reading about that yesterday in the paper.

I live in Delaware and they apparently are becoming a real problem, not only with farmers, but with country clubs and golf courses. They band together and come out at night and root up fairways and destroy crops and will kill and eat young livestock. They claim they will eat just about anything. The writer of the article said that he saw a band of then eating a dead deer by the roadside. They are said to be very aggressive too.

Hope you do great at the fair by the way. I was wondering where you got to. Have fun!

  5. I have heard of the feral pig problem, but I haven't heard any first hand stories about them being in my area yet.

  6. wow.. thants weird! I have honestly never heardof feral pigs.. unless you mean bores or whatever their called.

    Do they actually eat kids!??

  7. Hi Bo!

We had feral pigs where I come from.  We would hunt after dark in the woods of the South.  You could 'smell' them in the dark.  Almost 'skunk like.'  VERY dangerous to us and the hounds.

I was driving a full size Bronco down a wooded trail and a sow with piglets was alongside the road.  That psycho sow rammed my truck repeatedly cause she was mad and protective.  If I'd have been on foot...I would have needed to haul my hiney up a tree or shoot it.  They are MEAN MEAN!!   And the boars are worse.

Hope you're having a good time...

  8. Have a Good Time!!!!

We have had a feral pig problem on the horse farm for years, they hide out in the woods, root up things, and are aggressive....

they also taste good when turned into ham and bacon......

  9. I hate feral pigs. We use to have some around our old barn that no one told me about till I found them on the trail. And by them I mean 2 big ones and a bunch of little babies. Nasty little buggers. I can definitly see them going after small animals.
