County Championship Division 2 - Surrey v Kent - Day 4 Recap
On an exciting hour’s play on the fourth day, Surrey eventually triumphed over Kent by 21 runs, in a match of the County Championship Division Two, played at the Kennington Oval, London on July 13, 2011.
With 52 runs needed, Kent could only add 30 to their overnight score, as they were bundled out for 300 in their second innings.
However, the match will be remembered for the heroics of the Kent captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-Key-c2349, who scored a marvelous 162, which almost single handedly led his side to victory. His innings was compiled of 16 boundaries and one six.
With the match evenly poised going into the 4th day, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802 needed 52 more runs to complete a memorable victory, though only had 2 wickets to count to. It was the pairing of Key and Robbie Joseph who resumed the innings for their side. While Joseph
was yet to open his account, all rested on the shoulders of Key, who was playing on 144.
However, the day started with the duo getting 10 runs from the first two overs. With seemingly, the match slipping out their hand, Surrey captain, Hamilton- Brown, ringed in changes as he introduced spin from both ends.
Knowing that the fourth day wicket would turn, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Surrey-c851 spin bowlers also took full use of the rough as debutant Zafar Ansari removed the dangerous Key.
Key had moved to a well made 150 but could not guide his side through, as trying to play a paddle sweep in order to keep the strike; Ansari took maximum use of the rough, as he cleaned up the Kent skipper’s leg stump.
As Key left the field, he received great applause from all over, even from the opposing player.
This brought the 11th man Ashley Shaw onto the crease and right in the firing line. Both help their side post 300 on the board but could not manage to guide them to a victory as Gareth Barry removed Shaw.
In an attempt to reverse sweep, the right- hander mis- judged the ball completely, which took the glove and fell kindly to short leg fielder, Jason http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Symonds-c44611, leaving Joseph stranded on 3, at the non- strikers end.
Earlier on Day 3, Surrey set a target of 322 after being bowled out for a meager 184 in their second innings. Kent start was also shaky, with only 2 batsmen making more than 20, leaving it all for their captain, who just failed to get them to the finishing
line.
The win earns Surrey 23 championship points as they are now just one point behind Division 2 rivals http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783, at no 5 with 108 points.
Kent however, Languish second from bottom, earning 5 points, which takes them to 75 points.
