County Championship Division One: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Nottinghamshire-c826 - Day 1 Review
A disciplined bowling, complimented by athletic performance in the field helped Nottinghamshire roll over Yorkshire to a below par total of 178 on Day 1 of County Championship Division One at Headingley, Leeds on Tuesday.
Nottinghamshire’s bowling attack led by Ryan Sidebottom had Yorkshire reeling at 89 for 5 at lunch. The remarkable line and length maintained by the bowlers did not allow the Yorkshire batting line-up to open their arms. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jonathan-Bairstow-c1727 was the top scorer for Yorkshire with an innings of 45 runs from 81. Sidebottom, Franks, Adams and Patel shared 2 wickets apiece.
Yorkshire, after winning the toss opted to bat first but under overcast, humid conditions, the decision backfired. Captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Gale-c1039 was soon made to regret that decision as the leading run scorer in the First Division Adam Lyth departed on the fifth ball of the opening over after recording a third duck in the ongoing season. The Yorkshire left-hander edged a swinging ball from Ryan Sidebottom into the gloves of Chris Read behind the wickets.
A misunderstanding between the opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ali-Brown-c994 standing at cover, shaped to take a single but thought against it when his partner was halfway down the track.
Anthony McGrath and skipper Andrew Gale added 31 runs to the scorecard from the next 8 overs before Gale was trapped leg before by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Paul-Franks-c2163. Gale earned his side 24 runs from 19 balls. During his 33 minutes stay at the crease, Gale plundered five boundaries as well.
Gale’s departure took Jonathan Bairstow to the crease and in partnership with McGrath, the pair played a sensible partnership of 46 runs, taking the side to 81 for 3. A flurry of sweetly-timed boundaries eased the nerves for Yorkshire. McGrath plundered 3 boundaries from four balls off Andre Adams. However, the excitement was short lived as McGrath nicked Andre Adams to skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andre-Adams-c1033 an over before the end of the morning session. Brophy could score only 5 runs from 18 balls.
After the lunch break, Bairstow and Adil Rashid earned the side 15 runs from three overs. In the 32nd over, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajmal-Shahzad-c42489 and the fluent Jonathan Bairstow posted 32 runs for the seventh wicket partnership. The confident Bairstow reached an individual total of 45 runs by hitting nine boundaries. Bairstow was Yorkshire’s seventh batsman to lose his wicket. A beautiful delivery from Sidebottom chipped Bairstow’s stumps after swinging in late.
That became 144 for 8 when Ajmal Shahzad tried to stretch an outside off-stump delivery from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Samit-Patel-c2426, ending Yorkshire’s first innings for only 178 runs. Ryan Sidebottom was marvellous with the ball conceding at an economy of 1.66 runs per over. In his 15 over spell, he bowled 6 maiden overs.
By the close of play, Nottinghamshire had regained the momentum, reaching 147 with seven wickets still intact. Samit Patel was not out at 37 while David Hussey was playing at 35.
