You could go down to Cork and See the Blarney Stone. The myth is if you kiss it, You’ll never be lost for words.

  2. Lots you can do in County Cork. There's Cork city, with its cafes, arts scene, etc.

Cobh is near the city, and was formerly known as Queenstown, and was the last stop of the legendary ocean liner the Titanic. There's a museum there now.

Midleton has a whiskey distillery, but you have to be 18 to sample anything.

West Cork is wonderful, and very popular, many Europeans have settled here. The islands of Cape Clear and Sherkin are wonderful, but you can't bring a car to Cape Clear. It's also a Gaeltacht, or Irish-speaking area. Don't worry - everyone speaks English too. I'd also recommend Beara Peninsula, Allihies is great and you have to see the Healy Pass, from which when the weather is clear the view is amazing.

I'd also check out Bantry, and recommend driving over the mountains from Bantry to Ballyvourney or Ballymakeery - wild, bandit country. You can stop and visit the lake at Gougane Barra along the way.

Mallow Castle is haunted, apparently. Watch out for white rats, there's a legend concerning the Jephsons (English in origin but now Irish) who lived there, and a stranger who brought a white rat. Very creepy.

    Go orienteering at Newmarket.

Contact Comhaltas Ceoilteoiri Eireann (www.comhaltas.ie) for information about trad music classes and trad dancing, set dancing is extremely popular and you certainly get a workout with it!
