County teams do not give enough attention to spinners, says Peter Such - Cricket News Update
England and Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) spin bowling coach, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Mark-Such-c81817, has claimed that the spinners in the country do not get enough attention at the domestic level and coaches give priority to batsmen and fast bowlers.
Historically, England has produced very few spinners of the highest quality, but at the present moment, they are lucky to have the services of one of the best spinners in International cricket, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GP-Swann-c1501. He has played a huge role in
England’s success in the last couple of years.
However, looking at County cricket, it is evident that there are not many young quality spinners who can replace Swann in the coming years.
Because of conditions which favour seam bowlers, Such believes that the domestic teams give more attention to their fast bowlers and batsmen. He expressed that Counties are ready to spend handsome amounts of money in order to get a good
coach for these two departments but very seldom a County would hire a specialist for the spinners.
Such said, "What you tended to find were the vast majority of county cricket clubs would have a batting coach or a fast-bowling coach but when it came to wicket-keeping or spin bowling, they didn't really pay the same amount of attention
to it.”
Such himself was an off-spinner in his playing days and has played 11 Test matches for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013. He grabbed 37 scalps at an average of 33.56, including a couple of five-wicket hauls.
A team usually plays just one spin bowler, or a maximum of two, in conditions which are conducive for slow bowlers and this is the major reason why Such believes that the county teams are reluctant to hire coaches for them.
"It's a numbers game - there are more batters and more fast bowlers, so you're going to gear your coaching towards those groups. If there was a need for spin-bowling coaching they would tend to parachute in somebody who'd do a couple of
days then vanish for months,” he added.
