Couples of question about a relative traveling from Spain?

I have a relative traveling from Spain to Houston, TX.

First they are going to arrive from Spain to New Jersey and the flight number from the trip from Spain to New Jersey is different from the trip from New Jersey to Houston, TX. Does that mean that they have to change planes?

Second question, it seems like she going to arrive in New Jersey at 2:00pm and the next flight to Houston TX will be leaving at 8:00pm ... What can you do during those 6 hours. Do they let you get off the airplane. I live in New Jersey, Is it possible I could go and see her at least in the lobby, I mean she's going to be there for 6 hours...

does anybody now?

  1. Yes, the two flight numbers indicate a change of planes.  Regardless, s/he will have to get off the plane and clear customs and immigration in New Jersey (I'm assuming Newark) before boarding their domestic flight.  S/he will then re-check luggage to Houston.

Since you relative will have exited the sterile area (and at that point be cleared into the United States) you can visit with him/her landside and spend a couple of hours outside the airport even, if you like.  I would suggest allowing at least an hour (since your relative will be checked in already and bags will have been rechecked) to navigate security before the domestic leg.

    Good luck!
