  1. She should get her focus on something a little more concrete...for example, maybe she wants to help animals that need foster care or people who need help learning to read and write.  Once she gets a clear focus, talk to people who are doing those things now and find out what got them there.  Also, look through the help wanted section of the paper and see what the job requirements are for things she's interested in.  Good luck.

  2. Contact your local Animal  shelter, I am sure they have their own schooling for volunteers.

  3. *Any* area of expertise is valued by organizations that involve volunteers. Organizations that help people or animals need accountants, marketing professionals, facilities managers, program directors, etc.

Even if she wants to focus on animals, a focus on human health or psychology as an undergrad would be a good path to take. Learning a second language will also be a huge asset (different areas of the USA have different needs in this regard).

In the short term, any course that helps prepare her to deal with disaster situations will also be of value by organizations needing volunteers to help people or animals.

If you are in the USA, here are places to look for volunteering opportunities with organizations in your area:

    VolunteerMatch, http://www.volunteermatch.org

    Idealist, http://www.idealist.org

    Change.org, http://www.change.org

    CraigsList, http://www.craigslist.com

    Network for Good, http://www.networkforgood.org

    http://www.1-800-volunteer.org/

    ServeNet, http://servenet.org/

Also, contact your local volunteer center; you can find this via the Points of Light Foundation web site, http://www.pointsoflight.org/centers/

There's also this government sponsored site, http://volunteer.gov/gov/ which provides volunteer positions through USA federal land agencies like Fish & Wildlife, Forest Service, National Parks, etc.

If you want to be a volunteer to help with the consequences of a natural disaster, such as Hurricane Katrina, you need to register and prepare NOW. Here's a web site where you can register and start your preparation so that you can help the next time disaster strikes:

    http://www.helpindisaster.org/

  4. course in social work.....

  5. If he is looking to eventually turn it into a job he may consider volunteering for someplace that he would eventually want to work. Or in the same field he would like to work. For example he could go to the nearest humane society and ask if they are accepting volunteers.  They are pretty open to anyone and it is a good way to start developing a resume even as a teenager.  Also he may want to check with the united way they can almost always refer you to agencies looking for volunteers.
