I recently put a question in about choosing business for a major at 33 and some of the feed back was that it's not the best idea. Any suggestions on choosing a major at my age and changing career paths.

  1. Firstly - what do you do now? What are you qualified at? I had a diploma and certificate in a certain field and could never gain the degree part-time. It was only ever offered full time. I ended up wanting to change career/direction. But then I found a school that allowed one to study part-time (in this particular field). It took four years. But here's the beauty: I am now qualified with a bachelors degree in this field AND ALL my years of experience is valid and count.

My point: If you can avoid changing career then you do not throw away all your previous years of experience. If you were to study further or four years and only then start working in this new field - you'll find when you get to middle age - you'll be far behind others of your same age - often overlooked for management positions.

Hope you'll find a way that suits you. Cheers.

  2. Lots of people I know have taken an accounting correspondence course while continuing their job.  Its low risk, as you still have your job and accounting leads down many paths.  And if you decide that it is not your thing - then you can easily back out without losing much.
