If/When you're house-hunting how many bedrooms do you look for in the house?

The number of bedrooms a house has is a good indication of it's size and I'm trying to find out what is popular/sought after in the housing market. Please answer, needed for coursework.

Other questions I put up will be related and answers really appreciated.

  1. When buying a house it all depends what you intend to do with it. If you are occupying it yourself, then there should be at least two bedrooms, that way you can have space for someone to stay over, or you could let the second bedroom out. This would give an income that could offset the mortgage payments.

If buying to let, then at least two bedrooms, as this would be easier to let than a one bedroom . Especially with the downturn in the housing market it would also be easier to sell on. This is especially important for apartment dwellings. (Dont touch a one bed flat)

If buying as a couple, or letting to a couple at least one spare bedroom  just in case there are the pitter patter of tiny feet along the way.

Finally the bigger the house the better, but most important is LOCATION. Accessability to transport, shops, schools etc,and a quiet area, are the most sought after qualities a buyer looks for.

  2. Normally I would look for 2 bedrooms and also 2 baths. It's just me and the fiance, but the extra room is needed either for company or an office. It is not always an indication of size.  Depending on where you are located has alot to do with the average size of the home that is popular for the neighborhood or entire area.

  3. I believe that if money isn't an issue, the rule of thumb would be to figure out how many you will actually use on a day to day basis and get one more than that.

Good Luck I hope this helps!

  4. It depends on the number of people in your family. If it's just you and your spouse then you would probably want at least two bedrooms, one being used as a quest room. Maybe three bedrooms if you want to use one for an office or extra sitting room. If you have children then of course you would need a bedroom for each child. So if it's you, your spouse and two children you may want four to five bedrooms, one being used as a guest room. It really depends on the number of people in the family.

  5. My wife and I looked for 2 bedrooms (one would be a spare bedroom or a study), but we ended up buying a 3 bedroom place at a great price. We have no kids, but it's big enough to turn one of the spare bedrooms into a nursery if we decided to.

  6. 3 and 4 are the most common, although sqaure footage can vary widely, I would not agree that number of bedrooms gives ANY indication of house size.

I have 3 children and need a home office, so I require at least 5 bedrooms.

  7. When purchasing a home you should consider resale ... I look for a minimum of 3 bedrooms.
