Courtney Conlogue and Nage Melamed advance to Round 4 of Estoril Surf & Music Billabong Girls Pro
America’s Courtney Conlogue walked away with the top honours from the fifth heat of Estoril Surf & Music Billabong Girls Pro’s Round 3 on Saturday, June 11th, at the Praia do Guincho beach in Estoril, Portugal.
Conlogue clinched the victory by defeating Hawaii’s Nage Melamed, France’s Justine Dupont and Australia’s Sarah Beardmore in the four-way battle. Melamed managed to stay alive in the competition by securing the runner-up position.
Dupont and Beardmore, on the other hand, found themselves getting eliminated from the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star event after rounded out the third and fourth position respectively.
As the heat kicked off, the American surfer, Conlogue, made her form evident by catching a wave and throwing a combination of impressive tricks to open her account with 7.50 points. She struggled to find another good score afterwards, but eventually earned
a 6.50 in the later stages of the heat to finish with a two-wave total of 14.00.
None of the three surfers competing in the heat were able to best Conlogue’s score, hence allowing her to walk away victorious. Her place in the next round of the competition was also confirmed.
Melamed’s performance during the heat was not too short of decent either. Almost half-way through the heat, she locked a way to score 6.00 points off it. After searching for another good score, she eventually earned a 5.80 in the final moments of the heat
to finish with a heat-total of 11.80 points. Though she missed out on victory by a 2.20-point deficit, she still managed to survive the third round and qualify for the next round of the competition; round of 12.
France’s Dupont got off to a decent start, scoring 6.50 points off her first wave. However, that ended up being the only highpoint for her during the heat. She desperately searched for another good score to add to her 6.50, but the effort remained futile.
She eventually earned 4.30 points off a wave in the last minutes of the heat to finish with a two-wave total of 10.80 points. The score put her in third place, consequently eliminating her from the competition.
Australia’s Beardmore had a miserable time out in the sea during the heat. She looked totally out of rhythm and failed to catch a single decent wave. Her two best scores included a 3.00 and 2.40. The poor performance pushed her to the last position, which
meant that she no longer remained in the event title race.
With the conclusion of the fifth heat, only one more heat was left in the round of 24 and two more spots in the round of 12 were left vacant.
