Courtney Conlogue and Tyler Wright jump to Round 3 at Roxy Pro 2012
America’s Courtney Conlogue and Australia’s Tyler Wright got off to an excellent start at Roxy Pro 2012, the latest stop on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, advancing straight into the third round after
claiming top honours in their respective Round 1 heats that went down at Cote des Basques in Biarritz, France, on Friday, July 13.
Conlogue got the better of New Zealand’s Sarah Mason and Hawaii’s Coco Ho in the opening heat of the first round to jump to Round 3 while relegating her two rivals to the second round.
The second heat saw America’s Lakey Peterson and her compatriot Sage Erickson succumb to an impressive performance by Wright, consequently having to surf in Round 2 for a place in the third round.
With three-to-five foot waves along with a sunny skies and warm weather prevailing at the primary event site, the stage was all set for the elite female surfers to put on a memorable show for the huge crowd gathered at Cote des Basques.
Conlogue, current No.4 on the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings, apparently brought her solid form to France to stamp her authority over Mason and Ho in the opening heat of the competition. She posted a 6.50 on the score-board early in the heat and backed
it up with an 8.00-point ride to finish with a decisive heat-total of 14.50 points.
Mason was nothing short of impressive either, earning a 6.25 and 6.90 off her best-two waves for a heat-total of 13.15 points. However, she was unable to rise above runner-up position.
Ho had to settle for a third-place finish after scoring a heat-total of 9.00 points, which comprised of a 4.00 and 5.00-point wave.
The second heat saw Wright, ASP Women’s World Tour sophomore and current No.5, put on an impressive performance. Navigating through the testing conditions on hand, she got her hands on a 7.50-point ride and added an additional 4.55 points to her account
in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a two-wave total of 12.05 points.
Peterson got off to a solid start, earning a 7.00 off her first business-wave. However, she struggled to back it up with another decent score and eventually had to settle for a heat-total of 10.65 points.
Erickson finished third after scoring a 5.00 and 3.10 off her best-two waves for a heat-total of 8.10 points.
The surfing action continued at Cote des Basques with the remaining Round 1 heats of Roxy Pro 2012.
