Courtney Conlogue defeats Sofia Mulanovich to qualify for the Dow AgroSciences Pro Quarter-finals
America’s Courtney Conlogue managed to triumph over Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich in their Round 4 match-up at the blue ribbon event of the TSB NZ Surf Festival, the Dow AgroSciences Pro, which continued at Fitzroy Beach in Taranaki, New Zealand, on Saturday,
April 14.
Conlogue’s success over Mulanovich served to take her through into the Quarter-finals while bringing the competition to a premature end for her rival in the process.
The third of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series event resumed on Saturday after remaining on hold on Friday due to strong winds. The event organisers were looking to wrap up the remaining heats of
the competition in clean three foot waves that were on offer on Saturday.
With the world’s best female surfers arriving at the primary event with the same motive of getting their hands on the coveted event title and crucial ASP Women’s World Tour rating points, the intensity and excitement of the battles had been nothing short
of epic.
Both Conlogue and Mulanovich had done well to ensure their survival in the competition so far, though neither of them was able to claim success in their Round 3 heats. This in turn forced them to take a trip to Round 4 to face each other in the battle for
the Quarter-final spot.
As the clash between the two surfers got underway, Conlogue wasted no time in getting down to business. She locked her first business-wave in the opening minutes of the heat to unload a string of exquisite tricks, earning an impressive 8.43 for the effort.
This moved her into an early lead while putting her Peruvian rival under pressure.
Keeping the momentum going, the American surfer caught her second business-wave to add an additional 5.67 points to her account to take her heat-total to 14.10 points.
Mulanovich had a tough task at hand, though she was more than capable of achieving it. However, things did not work out her way as she collected a couple of scores in the six-point range to finish with a heat-total of 12.67 points. The 1.43-point deficit
forced her to concede victory to Conlogue, consequently sending her through into the Quarter-final.
