Courtney Conlogue defeats Tyler Wright in Vans US Open of Surfing semi-finals – Surfing news
America’s Courtney Conlogue got the better of Australia’s Tyler Wright in the first semi-final of women’s Vans US Open of Surfing, which continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Sunday, July 28, 2013.
The battle was expected to be a thrilling one, though the local favourite pretty much asserted her dominance from the get-go and eventually had a smooth sailing to victory.
Both the surfer had brought top form with them to the sixth of eight events on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, apparently aware of the impact that a successful result could have on their chances of securing
the coveted World Title.
Wright had been dominant since the opening round of Vans US Open of Surfing. Landing one outstanding performance after another, she had smoothly made her way into the semi-finals, holding her own against some of the best in the business along the way.
Conlogue had been nothing short of impressive either. Making full use of her familiarity with the waves, she sent a handful of competitors out of the competition to step closer to the overall win.
Pitted against each other in the first semi-final, both Conlogue and Wright had their work cut out for them.
As the battle got underway, the Australian sensation got down to business right away and posted a 5.83 on the scoreboard off her very first wave. She kept the momentum going to add an additional 5.50 points to her account, thus getting to a heat-total of
11.33 points.
Conlogue went through a series of average scores before stamping her authority over her rival with a near-perfect 9.27-point ride. Backing it up with a 6.80-point wave, she finished the heat on a heat-total of 16.07 points, which served to earn her a comprehensive
victory.
“I did the best I could with what I had out there and Courtney (Conlogue) caught the best waves,” Wright said. “A 3rd is the best result I’ve ever had here at the US Open and I’m happy with that.”
Aside from missing out on the event title, Wright also found herself slipping from the No.1 spot on the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour rankings.
