Courtney Conlogue downs Laura Enever to reach Vans US Open of Surfing semi-finals – Surfing news
America’s Courtney Conlogue managed to secure her place in the semi-finals at women’s Vans US Open of Surfing, stop no.6 of 8 on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, after getting
the better of Hawaii’s Laura Enever in the first quarter-final that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
The local favourite was right on her money from the get-go in her latest heat, showcasing her exquisite skills while navigating the slow high-tide conditions at the main event site that she was too familiar with.
“With that the high tide was pushing in, I knew it was going to get inconsistent and softer,” Conlogue said. “I wanted to get a quick start and build my scores rather than wait for that big banger score because it might be only
two sixes that get you through. I’m happy I got that one left off of Laura (Enever) because it was one of the those waves where you could manufacture a score. I had a good heat and I’m happy to get through that one.”
After claiming a win over reigning five-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore of Australia in Round 4, Enever was high on confidence as she stepped into the quarter-finals to lock horns with an in-form Conlogue.
The battle was expected to be high on intensity, as both the surfers had made it quite clear through their performances over the course of the week that they meant business.
As the battle for a place in the semi-final got underway, the 20-year-old Conlogue got down to business right away. Putting her intimate knowledge of the waves to use, she got herself in a position to catch a juicy wave and
capitalised on it by executing a combination of powerful carves and turns, thus earning a 6.33 for the effort.
Keeping the momentum going, the American surfer added an additional 6.30 points to his account off her final wave of the heat, thus getting to a heat-total of 12.63 points.
Enever adopted a pretty conservative approach during the heat, apparently saving her energy for the right moment. However, her strategy did not quite go her way, as she only managed to register a heat-total of 9.66 points, which
included a 6.83 and 2.83-point ride.
