Courtney Conlogue downs Rebecca Woods to step into Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic Final
Another Australian surfer was sent packing from the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic as Rebecca Woods succumbed to America’s Courtney Conlogue in the second Semi-final that went down at Dee Why point in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, April 21.
With a convincing victory over Woods, Conlogue advanced to the Final of the fourth of seven stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Title Series.
The prestigious female surfers were not met with the best of surfing conditions as they arrived at the primary event site a week ago. The competition remained on hold on day one due to unfavourable winds and the situation did not get any better over the
days that followed.
As Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic reached its final day, Mother Nature graced Dee Why point with two-to-three foot waves. Getting hands on a big score proved to be challenging yet again, though there were plenty of scoring opportunities on offer that
kept the surfers optimistic and busy during their pursuit of the coveted ASP Women’s World Tour ranking points and big prize money on offer.
Conlogue had done exceptionally well to adjust to the demanding surfing conditions and put on a series of spectacular performances over the last few days, which included a sensational win over Australia’s Sally Fitzgibbons, to reach the Semi-finals.
She now faced another local talent, Woods, in a battle to determine who got to have a shot at the event title.
As the second Semi-final got underway, Conlogue got off to an excellent start, unloading a series of impressive tricks on her first business-wave to post a 7.50 on the score-board. She remained busy with her hunt for another good score and eventually collected
a 6.83-point ride in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 14.33 points.
Woods failed to match her rival’s performance and only managed to score a 4.77 and 5.33 off her best-two waves to finish with a heat-total of 10.10 points. As a result she conceded victory to Conlogue, sending her through into the Final.
“It’s a bittersweet feeling at the moment,” Woods said. “I’ve had a few last places this year, so in some regards I was just happy to put it together for a few heats. I’ve made about nine Semi-finals in my life and still never made it into that elusive Final.
It’s good to be pushed by the younger girls.”
Conlogue was to take on Hawaii’s Malia Manuel in the final of the Commonwealth Bank Beachley Classic.
